Beyond Introduction

Beyond - At or to the farther side (of); past; outside; later than; out of reach, comprehension or range; surpassing; not subject to; the future life; the unknown; very remote or out of the way place (Oxford Dictionary)

The title of the exhibition, BEYOND represents the ways in which individuals have extended their ideas and practice during the two year duration of their studies at the Southbank Institute of Technology. This concept expresses feelings with regards to future ventures and for some a drive to continue to break the boundaries of existing knowledge and to move further with their education or professional development in the visual arts industry.

As this group of emerging artists move beyond the canopy of their Diploma we are witness to the diversity of the developments in thinking which encompass current issues and themes such as, environment, globalization, identity and poetry through media such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation and drawing.

My work revolves around the expressive portrayals of emotion through themes such as sexuality, religion and popular culture. I explore the chaotic realm of the human psyche, perceptions of reality, my personal view on spirituality and the role of religion in contemporary society.

I have lived in Brisbane for most of my life and have developed drawing skills from an early age. My focus at present is in landscape, figurative and in particular portrait genres of drawing and painting.

Key influences are music and photographyin which my emotive and melodramatic artworks take inspiration from.

Work In Progress: Amor Vincit Omnia

Inspired by Caravaggio's Cupid

For something that merely started out as a sketch became one of my most ambitious and difficult projects to date. In the beginning I thought I had the painting set and ready to go, but without any references for anatomy or lightening it soon became a problem. Soon after having encountered these issues I put the project on hold, when I began to collect a number of photographic and illustrated references I resumed painting and bit by bit I slowly corrected and redesigned my composition.

The references I found helped but not to a great extent, soon I had to rely on nothing but my intuition and with the help of a few friends that kindly agreed to pose for me to assist with correct lighting details.

After enduring many late hours spent painting and going over small anatomical errors, I began to paint the wings. I used photocopies from a text book that contained numerous illustrations of different species of birds as guidelines for the details on the wings, which compared to the rest of the painting was a relatively short task. I also went back to Caravaggio's painting for reference from time to time in order to maintain the composition without going overboard.

(The images below show a general progression of the painting over a period of several weeks.)

We all have a bad habit

Some of those we need to break

For ourselves

For our loved ones

For our country

And our future

My work questions some of the habits we are trying to break in our modern lives – the changes facing big business, our government and our people.

Following my artist residency in Denmark, my sculptures reflect upon the notion of wind power versus non-renewable resources and the potential for wind power to make changes within the global landscape.

WORK IN PROGRESS - April 2010

Here is an image of some free-standing works I am preparing. These have been through a gas firing with heavy reduction - with a light spray of salty water beforehand.

I am very happy with the simplicity of these pieces - especially with the addition of the soft reeds.

This piece I completed on my Mum's birthday. She is a very fun Mum ....and I titled this one: 'LOLLIPOPS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!'.

It really is a stray piece running parallel to my other artworks which have a more serious tone. Based on a trip to the beautiful old Tivoli Amusement Fair in Copenhagen, where the lollipops were amazing, this is a colourful rebellion against all things plain, all things conservative and hopefully it challenges any thoughts of self deprivation - I hope it dares you to let go and INDULGE!!

Coming soon may be the sister project called: 'Dark chocolate is good for you!'

Work in progress May 2010 - I have returned to my more 'grown-up' topics...my fascination with the notion of wind energy in Australia grows into a large wall sculpture: 'From Little Things!'

I have been immersed in mini-Aussie shapes all weekend - these are textured with coins from both Australia and Denmark. Wind energy is responsible for quite a lot of kroners in Denmark. I only wish that Australia would put our dollars there too!

The hanging of all these individual porcelain pieces has been carefully mapped out.

They will be wall-mounted in the studio gallery - on black! To contrast this background, I am planning to use a celadon glaze I have made.

Specialisation: Mixed Media
I am passionate about traveling which is reflected in these artworks that speak of my overseas experiences. Negotiating these new territories challenges and empowers, pushes the boundaries of comfort zones and immerses one in each peculiar culture. My inspirations come from the memories, photographs and feelings I experience in each journey. Mixed media is important to the artworks because the surfaces, textures and media chosen enhance the meaning of the works and the stories of these journeys. In my mind these works act as a travel diary or journals of my experiences.

My work proposal: Mixed media and photo montage
Artists I have been researching for my BEYOND art works:

David Hockney is an english painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, who is based in Bridlington, Yorkshire, although he also maintains a base in London. An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century works with photo montage as well, cropping the photos and mounting that back together. He's work looks very alike mine montages ;)
